When the Roof Caves In: Finding Shelter That Lasts

Our roof is falling apart—but somehow, in all the noise and dust, I’m reminded that there’s a refuge we’ll never have to rebuild. If life feels like it's crumbling, this one's for you. 🙏💭

Right now, as I type, I can hear footsteps above me—boots scraping and heavy thuds echoing through the ceiling. There’s a symphony of hammering and drilling going on overhead. Our roof is being replaced.

We live in an old house, full of character and creaks—and like all things in this world, it needs care. Over the years, our roof has grown weary. We’ve patched it, ignored it, hoped the leaks would hold off just a little longer. But the time has come. (Please send your thoughts and prayers… especially to our bank account.)

I knew it was bad when I pulled up our house on Google Maps and could actually see the rust from space. That’s when it hit me—this roof, this covering we trust to keep us safe, is breaking down before our eyes.

And isn’t that just life?

Jesus once said we live “where moth and rust destroy” (Matthew 6:19). Nothing in this world lasts forever. Even our homes—our sanctuaries, our safe places—are still vulnerable to wear and tear, to storms, to slow decay.

But as I sat in the chaos, I was reminded of something unshakable:

There is a shelter that doesn’t rust. A refuge that doesn’t leak. A covering that never needs replacing.

“Those who live in the shelter of the Most High
will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.”
(Psalm 91:1 NLT)

God is our true refuge. Our real safety isn’t tied to walls and roofs. It’s not nailed down to wood and shingles. It’s found in Him. When life feels uncertain—when the foundations tremble—He is constant.

“God is our refuge and strength,
always ready to help in times of trouble.”
(Psalm 46:1 NLT)

Even as hammers pound above my head, even as the costs and chaos swirl around me, I feel peace—not because the house is being fixed, but because my soul is being held.

God doesn’t rust.
He doesn’t weaken.
He doesn’t walk away.

“The Lord himself watches over you!
The Lord stands beside you as your protective shade.”
(Psalm 121:5 NLT)

So if you feel like things are caving in—whether it’s your home, your heart, or just the weight of it all—I hope you know this:

There is a place of safety that no storm can shake.

And He’s holding you even now.
