When the Earth Trembles: Finding Peace in God’s Power

Even in life’s strongest quakes and fiercest waves, God’s love stands unshaken.

Yesterday, the earth shook with unimaginable force as a magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula. It wasn’t just another tremor—it was the sixth most powerful earthquake ever recorded. In its wake came a tsunami that surged across the vast Pacific Ocean.

Even here in New Zealand, thousands of kilometers away, we felt its reach. Our phones buzzed with urgent alerts through the night, including one at 6:30 this morning when the first waves touched our shores. Though the waves were small and, as far as I know, caused no damage, their impact wasn’t lost on me. We are over 10,600 km (6,600 miles) from where the earthquake struck, yet we were still touched by its power. That’s staggering when you pause to think about it.

Life can sometimes feel the same way. We find ourselves shaken by things we never saw coming, swept up in storms we can’t control. The challenges can feel so vast, so unstoppable, like a tsunami crashing over everything in its path.

But as I sat with this today, I was reminded of something deeper. As powerful as that earthquake and tsunami were, they are nothing compared to the power of our God. Scripture is filled with moments where God shows His authority over creation. He parted the Red Sea to deliver His people. He stopped the very rotation of the earth to give His children victory. He stilled a raging sea with a single word. The wind and waves knew His voice—and they obeyed.

Friend, if the God who commands the oceans and shakes the earth holds you in His hands, then no storm, no wave, no earthquake in your life is too great for Him. You may feel overwhelmed, but you are never abandoned. The ground beneath you may tremble, but His love for you will not.

So take heart. The God who moves mountains and calms seas is the same God moving in your life right now. And He will never let you go.

A Moment to Reflect:
What “earthquakes” or “waves” are you facing in your life right now? Take a moment to bring them before God and ask Him to remind you of His power and presence.

Prayer:
“Lord, when life shakes and the waves rise, help me remember that You are greater than every storm. Thank You for holding me steady when everything else feels uncertain. I trust that You are working for my good. Amen.”
