Believing Without Seeing: A Reflection on Faith
Recently, I shared a short video message on my social media channels for those who love Jesus but are still waiting for their ‘miracle.’ I’ve been encouraged to hear how God has used that message to uplift others.
As I was reflecting further, I was reminded of a powerful moment between Jesus and Thomas at the end of the book of John. After Jesus' resurrection, the other disciples told Thomas they had seen the risen Lord. But Thomas doubted, declaring that he wouldn’t believe unless he saw the wounds in Jesus’ hands and side for himself.
In His mercy, Jesus appears to Thomas and invites him to see and touch the wounds. Overcome with awe, Thomas exclaims, “My Lord and my God!”
Then Jesus says something profound:
“You believe because you have seen me. Blessed are those who believe without seeing me.” (John 20:29 NLT)
Jesus is highlighting something extraordinary. Thomas believed because he saw. But there is a unique blessing for those who believe without seeing. The word “blessed” here can mean fortunate or well off. Why? Because there is a special reward for this kind of faith—a faith that trusts in God’s character and promises even in the absence of visible proof.
This theme is echoed throughout Scripture:
“Abram believed the Lord, and the Lord counted him as righteous because of his faith.” (Genesis 15:6)
“Without faith it is impossible to please God.” (Hebrews 11:6)
Why is this important? Because we all face moments when the outcome is unclear, or life doesn’t unfold as we hoped. In these times—when the ‘miracle’ hasn’t come—faith becomes our anchor. It’s in these very moments that we have the opportunity to trust in God's goodness, His faithfulness, and His nature, even when we cannot see the result.
So if that’s where you are today—still waiting, still hoping—take heart. Even if your miracle hasn’t arrived, know that there is great blessing in believing God is who He says He is. Your faith matters deeply to Him.
